With springtime in full effect, we at the Ferry company wanted to take a moment to highlight one of Block Island’s oldest and most beloved traditions—bird watching! Since the late 19^th century, bird watching or birding, has been a time-honored activity all over the globe.

Every year, Block Island specifically brings in visitors of all ages, from all around the world, as they ferry over to catch glimpses of some of the world’s most beautiful birds. The Island offers a unique hosting place and many plan full stays around just the avian activities!

A phrase that you may hear a lot of in 2017 is “sustainable tourism”. The idea focuses on what tourist destinations can do to take care of local environment and culture—while creating great experiences for travelers. Specifically, island destinations need special care with factors like waste management, rising sea levels, and erosion.

Block Island remains one of the most naturally gorgeous places in the country to visit. To do our part to help preserve that for even more generations, we want to share some really easy ways to have a greener, more eco-friendly stay on the Island.
