Happy Memorial Day!
Memorial day is a chance to reconnect with our values and our history by taking the time to honor those who fought and gave their lives for the ideals that we hold so dear. It started out as Decoration Day way back in 1868 after the American Civil War and it was established as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. Originally, it was observed on separate days—one for Confederates and one for Union. Since then the dates have merged into what we all now know as Memorial Day. It’s even come to mark the beginning of the summer season just like Labor Day marks the end.
There are many ways to observe Memorial Day. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials. There are parades with marching bands and lots of backyard cookouts. We can’t think of a better way to honor the occasion than spending time with family and friends.
This year, as always, we are celebrating by gearing up for the start of our busiest season! Beginning on Memorial Day, the Block Island Ferry will be in full swing. Our schedules have changed for the summer season to accommodate visitors, and we will have lots of fun contests and giveaways like our Photo Friday contest, which was a lot of fun for everyone last year.
Traveling to the island on one of our ferries is half of the Block Island experience. Many passengers agree that the trip wouldn’t be the same without the ferry ride. You can choose to relax inside out of the wind and sun, or you can go to an upper deck where the view is spectacular and the sea breezes are like medicine for your soul. Speaking of medicine for the soul, don’t forget to stop by the concession stand for one of our legendary Bloody Marys. It’s like the icing on the cake.
No matter how you choose to honor Memorial Day, we hope it’s safe and happy. We’ll be here for you when you’re ready to sail away!
