The Cafés of Block Island

Coffee. It’s there when we first wake up in the morning, lending a hand when we want to do nothing more than close our eyes. Just for another fifteen minutes, of course. It’s there when the weight of the midday reaches your shoulders, slowing you down. It’s there after a long day when all you want to do is sit down, enjoy the scent of summer on the not-quite-cool breeze, and relax.

On Block Island, our coffee shops are here to keep the yawns at bay, helping you enjoy the next part of your day without missing a beat. And they aren’t alone. Here are some of the best cafés on the Island that you don’t want to miss.

PAYNE’S DONUTS – 119 OCEAN AVE., NEW SHOREHAM

Payne’s has been a staple of the Island for over 50 years, and with good reason. Their coffee is made with the same promise as their donuts – hot and fresh!

Rumor has that the water of Block Island plays a key role in the great flavors of Payne’s menu. Of course, having refined their process and recipes over decades of experience couldn’t have hurt. Offering cinnamon, sugar, or plain, you can’t go wrong finding the donut that complements your coffee just right.

They’ll be reopening at a new location at the end of the month, so mark your calendars. This is a spot that’s certainly worth the wait.

OLD POST OFFICE BAGEL SHOP – 123 Ocean Ave., NEW SHOREHAM

Long lines are the surest sign of a quality coffee shop. That belief holds just as true for the Old Post Office Bagel Shop. Don’t let them scare you off! The staff knows their craft and makes sure you’re in and out and enjoying your order in no time. There’s shaded seating in the back, making it a great spot to sit back, relax, and enjoy your coffee.

The Brooklyn special – a toasted everything bagel with chive cream cheese, egg, and bacon – is just one of their items on the menu to start your morning on Block Island the right way. With reviews praising the “best bagels on the Island” and “the best bagels I’ve had outside of Brooklyn,” you owe it to yourself to stop by.

PERSEPHONE’S KITCHEN – 235 DODGE ST., NEW SHOREHAM

Being tucked away, Persephone’s can be easy to miss. And you certainly don’t want to do that. With an expansive menu covering hot and cold brewed coffee, espresso, macchiato, cappuccino, lattes, and red eyes – all at a great price – they’ll be able to provide whatever your morning calls for.

There can be a large line, depending on the season. It never hurts to arrive early or make it a plan to stop in for an earlier breakfast. Wake up for an early start at the beach. Pick up a coffee at Persephone’s. It’s hard to picture a better way to start the day.

The ferry also serves some good, hot coffee for those looking to enjoy a cup on the water.

Grab a Mug, and Sail Away…
