Chowder Hopping Around the Block
What goes into making some truly great chowder? Is it red or white? Boston style? Manhattan? New England? All the answers depend on who you ask. Everyone’s tastes are different, after all. Block Island may be known for its beaches and Ferry, but not everyone thinks of all the places to enjoy a great bowl of chowder.
Bar-hopping is all well and good, but it’s restrictive. Only people twenty-one and over can share in the experience. Chowder-hopping sidesteps the whole problem. It’s fun for the whole family! And Block Island has enough restaurants, diners, and more to keep you hopping from place to place throughout your whole trip.
The Oar
Named after the impressive collection of oars lining the walls, The Oar is found off West Side Road. Their sushi bar lets you order from a selection of fresh fish caught earlier that day, and their menu is filled with other delicious choices for those in your group who may be craving something different. But for fans of New England style clam chowder, this stop is a must on your Block Island chowder tour.
Plus, it’s hard to argue with the relaxing view looking out over the marina.
Mohegan Café & Brewery
Located on Water Street, Mohegan Café & Brewery puts you right in the middle of the action, with the sights and sounds of the ocean just around the bend.
Not only can you try some of their aptly named Mohegan Clam Chowder, but this café serves up chowder fries to really get things started. Don’t forget that Mohegan Café is also a brewery! So sit down, relax, and enjoy few of the specialty beers brewed in-house.
They’ll be open until the week after Columbus Day, so make sure you stop by before then to guarantee 2018 isn’t the year that you miss out.

Kimberly’s
Kimberly’s is well known around Block Island among both locals and visitors alike. It’s a classic for a reason. Chowder tastes vary wherever you go, and that’s no different in the Ocean State. The clear broth clam chowder they offer at Kimberly’s is a must-try for anyone who hasn’t had the chance. And if you have, then you know exactly why you’ll be going back for more.
If there’s a place off Ocean Avenue you should add to your days of chowder-hopping, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better suitor than Kimberly’s.

Rebecca’s Seafood Takeout
When looking down the list of Water Street hotspots, Rebecca’s Seafood Takeout definitely stands out. The mix of takeout and dockside dining allows it to fit perfectly into your day, whatever your schedule happens to look like. Enjoy a stroll down the street, take in everything around you that’s wholly, uniquely Block Island, and order a bowl of homemade clam chowder to keep you company along the way.
They’re open late, too, which makes it a good place to close out your day.
McAloon’s Saloon & Restaurant
McAloon’s Saloon isn’t just fun to say. Walk through the doors of this family-run restaurant and you’ll be greeted with a friendly staff, bright bar and dining area, and some quality New England clam chowder.
At the end of the day, the only person you can trust when it comes to picking the chowder you like best is you. The restaurants, cafés, and other eateries written here are just a handful of what you’ll find when you step off the Ferry.
There’s only one way to find your favorite.
