A Hike Around the Block
The leaves are starting to change and fall. Each new breeze decorates the ground with oranges, reds, and browns, casting everything in a new light. The refreshing chill of autumn opens paths that the summer heat and constant call of the beaches previously kept hidden. While the shores are always there, these trails are arguably better than ever. As long as you have water, snacks, and comfortable pair of shoes.
Autumn is the perfect season to spend more time outdoors and enjoy the beautifully unique sights of Block Island that these trails – and plenty more – have to offer.
Rodman’s Hollow

The plain of Rodman’s Hollow was formed by a glacial outwash. It’s two-hundred-and-thirty-acres covers everything from its woods and shrub-lined paths, to its open expanses, to its tucked away beach and more. There are two main directions that each trail will lead you to.
Take one, and you’ll be guided towards the base of the hollow, with another trail waiting to show you Fresh Pond. The peace and quiet makes it a great spot to relax for a few hours, either with a book or just enjoying the sights and sounds all around you. Take the second path and you’ll be led up where a gorgeous panoramic view practically begs to fill up your phone’s photo album.
Along with its trails, Rodman’s Hollow is also a great place to search for the Island’s infamous glass floats, too.
Fresh Swamp Preserve
You’ll find this preserve in the southern part of the Island, its meadows, shrubs, and more waving in the wind to greet you. Being a preservation, this area offers the opportunity to see rare plant and wildlife not likely found anywhere else. Shadbushes, little bluestems, switch grass and more are just some of the vegetation blanketing the ground. Look close enough and you could spot a meadow vole, or the American burrowing beetle, though not without a little luck.
While enjoying the sights and serenity that Block Island offers in spades, be sure not to neglect the skies. You might just catch a glimpse of the state’s endangered barn owl. Depending on the time of day, of course.
Clayhead Trail
Located three miles from town along Corn Neck Road, this trail is a little different from the rest, if only for what it offers trail-goers once they reach the topmost spot. Block Island locals have aptly nicknamed this attraction ‘The Maze,’ and it certainly fits. The mix of twists and turns within the series of connected paths allows you to take your time exploring and figuring out the trick for yourself.
If wandering The Maze isn’t something you’re interested in, the trails below are likely to suit your style. Clayhead utilizes a pair of branching paths. While one leads you off the beaten path to the practically secluded beach, the other guides you along the bluffs and incredible vistas from end to end. There’s sure to be something for all.
There are many facets to the full Block Island experience. These trails offer only a handful, with plenty more not mentioned here that’ll guarantee you’ve see the best that the Island offers. While some areas are open regularly, others may have seasons or require a call ahead. As always, it doesn’t hurt to do a quick check either online or by giving a quick phone call.
So Gear Up, and Sail Away…
