Surf’s Up on the Block

Surf’s Up on the Block

When you live so close to the water – or surrounded by it, in Block Island’s case – it becomes a part of you. The culture is molded by it, with borders fitted perfectly to every rise and fall of the tide.

While you may have explored a good bit of Block Island’s vast and different landscapes, there’s a good chance you haven’t experienced everything that the ocean around it has to offer. One of those experiences is surfing. And Block Island has some of the best places around to paddle out and meet your new favorite hobby.

Looks like a 57’ Chevy I used to have

Surf boards on the beachIt’s important to have the surf board that’s right for you. Don’t worry about trying to find what you’ve seen the pros use. Qualities that work for others may not work for you, and, as you’d imagine, it’s important to find the right balance when you’re looking to surf. There’s no such thing as the perfect board. It may take some trial and error, but it never hurts to ask the clerk or do a little research to get you off on the right start.

A healthy amount of time surfing is spent waiting for the right waves to come in. When you aren’t paddling across the water to get in position, you’ll be sitting on your board, eyes on the horizon. Surfers claim this as one of the most serene moments they’ve experienced. During this time, you’re more in sync with the nature around you. You’re experiencing Block Island in a way too few often do.

Whatever you’re looking to do, the good folks over at Diamondblue Surf Shop are the ones to visit for all things surfing on Block Island. For rental prices and information about training classes, you can visit their site here: diamondbluebi.com

They stick to certain breaks

Block Island CliffsBlock Island has plenty of locations for those looking to surf. It doesn’t matter whether it’s your first time or your fortieth. Black Rock Point is a solid place to start. The shores at the south of the island are often the most consistent for getting to experience the nicest wave breaks. You’ll want to follow the advice of the island’s keen surfers. There are plenty of sites you can use to check reports on swells and wind-direction to find the perfect spot.

Seasonal breaks play a role in what you’re looking for, too. The fall in particular sees the waters not too cold and coupled with nice, calmer waves that appeal to newer or younger surfers.

Some of the best breaks are likely kept secret by the men and women who surf it, but that just goes to show you the degree of exploration the island encourages. Your next favorite spot may be one that nobody’s ever seen or even heard of before. There’s only one way to find out.

100% Pure Adrenaline

Father and son surf lessonThere’s no better way to truly immerse yourself in a place than to spend time outside in the middle of it all. Part of what makes Block Island such a unique and incredible destination is its natural ability to provide a host of activities and locales to become engrossed in. It’s a place where time no longer matters. Your focus shifts instead to what you’re doing in the moment.

Surfing the waters around Block Island brings you an experience you haven’t felt before.
