Block Island on a Budget

Block Island on a Budget

There’s a misconception about vacation. How it needs to be this grandiose thing that takes at least a week to be done right and come close to being ‘worth it.’ Time off is exactly that. Time spent away from work. There’s only the mindset. And Block Island gives you the freedom to create an affordable, enjoyable getaway whenever you feel the need. Especially if you take advantage of the hints and tips below!

An Island Getaway Without the Island Price

Little girl at the beachWith a trip to Block Island, the only barrier to entry is a ticket for the Ferry. From then on, you get to sit back, relax, and enjoy however much time you put aside for yourself. The question then shifts from ‘Where are we going?’ to ‘What are we going to do when we get there?’ Fortunately, there are many different answers.

Elderly couple walkingThe first and maybe most obvious is setting yourself up for a beach day. There are more public beaches than you can count spread out all around Block Island. From the bigger, more populated spots, to the hidden treasures only the locals and Block Island die-hards know about, there are no wrong choices. It all depends on what fits your speed. The best part of all? They’re completely free! With a packed lunch and snacks for picnic, a book, the beach essentials such as sunscreen and some sunglasses, and whatever else fits into your most relaxing activities in hand, your day is set and ready to go. From sunup to sundown, the rest of world washes away in the rhythmic tides of the ocean.

Bike rentals can be the key that unlocks adventure for the entire day, taking you across the island to secluded locales you would never have seen otherwise. Lighthouse tours are a glimpse into the island’s history. The Island Free Library has a rotating schedule of daily and weekly events open to the public all year long. Block Island’s Maritime Institute is the perfect place to scratch that educational itch, complete with lecture series’, harbor tours, and even a photography cruise to help you get shots that will have your friends and family jealous.

Payne’s Donuts, Rebecca’s Seafood Takeout, Persephone’s Kitchen, and Club Soda are only scratches on the surface. The island’s food culture truly comes alive in the summer, with various festivals, food trucks, and Restaurant Week providing an entirely new and rejuvenated level of enjoyment.

Like we said at the start, the idea of what makes a vacation is subjective. We all need a break from our day-to-day grind. Time to zone out from life’s anxieties and recharge our batteries for the weeks still to come. The cost of relaxation is as much or as little as a Block Island Ferry ticket away.
